ican2

ican2 was created as part of Telford & Wrekin Council's short breaks pathfinder project ran from April 2008 to March 2011.

The ican2 Short Breaks programme is about providing activities for children and young people living in Telford and Wrekin with a disability or additional need - children who have, or would experience, difficulty attending groups, clubs or facilities without support. Short Breaks covers a wide range of provision from universal (open to all without the need for any assessment or specialist support) through to specialist (for example hospices and overnight residential care).

Children and young people are eligible for short breaks if they have a physical or learning disability, a hearing or visual impairment. It includes children with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome and children who may have challenging behaviour as a result of their learning disability. It also includes children who have complex needs and who may have palliative, life limiting or a life- threatening conditions.

Inclusive swimming lessons

All four pool sites within Telford & Wrekin (Wellington, Abraham Darby, Oakengates and Newport Pool) provide separate Junior and adult disability learn to swim sessions and these have been developed to bridge the gap between 1-1 lessons and mainstream classes. Fully qualified ASA swimming teachers at these sites deliver the disability lessons with enhanced knowledge of disabilities and cater for all abilities from beginner and upward, the emphasis is on learning through fun based sessions following the ASA Alpha Awards with a goal of working towards accessing mainstream swimming classes.

For more information contact one of the Swim4Life co-ordinators below based on your preferred site. The co-ordinators will then be able to determine the best way forward with the disability sessions.

SENSE

We know that being a parent of a child who is deafblind or has other complex disabilities can be challenging.

Sense began more than sixty years ago with a conversation between two mums. Mums who both had babies born deafblind as a result of rubella. They felt isolated - and worried that their children would be isolated and unable to enjoy meaningful, fulfilled lives. Together with other families, they proved this does not have to be the case.

With the right support, we believe it's possible for everyone to make sense of their world and the world around them. To communicate, connect and take part in life, no matter what.

Options

The Options Clinical Team has created a series of help sheets offering advice and guidance for parents and carers who look after children, young people and adults with autism.
This month’s help sheet is all about supporting children and adults with autism & learning disabilities to visit the dentist. Many of us dread the thought of visiting the dentist but for people with autism and/or learning difficulties it can be an especially challenging experience. Difficulties in communication, heightened sensitivity, unfamiliar smells, noises, bright lighting and strange tastes can overload a person’s sensory processing causing anxiety. However, with a supportive plan most people can have a positive experience at the dentist to ensure good oral health. Read more by clicking the link below and please feel free to forward this information to anyone who you feel will benefit from it.

Bendrigg

At Bendrigg Trust our mission is to challenge perceptions of disabled and disadvantaged people. This includes other people’s perceptions of people with disabilities, and the person’s own perceptions about what they think they can or can’t do. We do this through a variety of residential and adventure-based activities which promote independence, encourage inclusion and increase self-esteem. From the minute a person arrives they are supported and encouraged to do as much as they can, from making their own bed and helping at meal times, to pushing themselves to reach that little bit further up the climbing wall or taking their first canoe trip on open water. No matter what a person’s perceived abilities, we gently support and encourage them to challenge themselves throughout their stay.

Griffin Occupational Therapy

GriffinOT offers affordable and easily accessible online occupational therapy solutions for schools and parents. This includes an online Sensory Processing Disorder training course and from mid-2019 will include online motor skill development programmes. All GriffinOT programmes offer you more than a list of activities/strategies to try. Our primary aim is to help school staff and parents to understand why they’re doing these activities or using specific strategies. Most importantly, we also discuss how to implement all activities/strategies safely and correctly.

If you want to learn more about Sensory Processing Disorder, how it affects children and how to help, our online course ‘Sensory Processing: What’s the Fuss?’ could be a good solution for you. This is available for teachers and parents in an individual study format. There is also an inset format, which would be suitable for whole school training.

If your child has gross or fine motor skill delays, struggles with their pencil grip or finds using scissors really tricky, then our online motor skill development programmes may be relevant. Please visit our website for further information.
