Learning Support Advisory Team (LSAT)

The Learning Support Advisory Team (LSAT) in Telford plays a crucial role in supporting schools to raise the attainment of children and young people with special educational needs, ensuring they receive the best possible education. This team works collaboratively with school staff, parents, and other professionals to create inclusive learning environments that cater to the diverse needs of students.

Who are we?

The team is made up of a Team Lead and five LSATs. Every member of the team is a qualified teacher and all have additional qualifications in SEND.

What do we do?

Comprehensive Assessments and Observations

One of the primary functions of the LSAT is to conduct thorough assessments and observations of students who may have special educational needs. These assessments help in identifying areas of need, such as Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, Physical and Sensory and Communication and Interaction.

By understanding the unique challenges faced by each student, the team can provide tailored advice and strategies to support their learning.

Training and Professional Development

The LSATs offer a wide range of training and professional development opportunities for school staff. This includes centrally run courses and bespoke training sessions tailored to the specific needs of individual schools.

These training sessions cover various topics, including:

  • effective teaching strategies for students with SEND
  • the implementation of inclusive classroom practices
  • Good Autism Practice, ADHD awareness
  • Talk Boost Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2
  • Talk for Work.

By equipping teachers and support staff with the necessary skills and knowledge, the LSAT helps to build the capacity of schools to support all learners effectively.

Strategic Planning and Consultation

The LSAT works closely with school leadership teams to support the strategic planning and implementation of SEND policies and practices.

This includes conducting audits of school environments to ensure they are inclusive and accessible, providing advice on the development of SEND policies, and supporting schools in meeting their statutory obligations. The team also offers consultation sessions with parents, providing them with advice and support to help their children succeed in school.

Collaborative Working

Collaboration is at the heart of the LSAT's approach. The team works in partnership with other professionals, such as educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists, to provide a holistic approach to supporting students with SEND

This collaborative working ensures that all aspects of a student's needs are addressed, and that they receive the most appropriate support.

Building Positive Learning Communities

The LSAT aims to support schools in creating positive learning communities where all students feel valued and supported. This involves working with schools to promote inclusive practices. By fostering an inclusive school culture, the LSAT helps to ensure that all students can achieve their full potential.

In summary, the Learning Support Advisory Team in Telford provides a comprehensive range of services to support schools in meeting the needs of students with SEND. Through assessments, training, in-school support, strategic planning, and collaborative working, the LSAT helps to create inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive.
